What is the correct way to read British currency amounts?
In the US we would read $9.50 as Nine dollars and fifty cents, or just nine-fifty. $9.01 would be nine dollars and one cent, or nine-oh one. I don’t have a pound symbol on my keyboard. I have heard of several different British coin amounts, and I am just curious, as I read a lot of websites, and news stories from Britain.
In UK, £9.50 is nine pounds and fifty pence. £9.01 is nine pounds and one penny – never nine-oh-one.
Since British currency went decimal between 1968 and 1971, the terminology is much the same as your own. You might occasionally hear people saying they haven’t two shillings to rub together, but shillings went out the door with decimal coinage, and any other amounts you hear are just historically descriptive, but don’t reflect current coinage.
