Should we be losing the Britannia design from the 50 pence coin?

Gordon Brown gives the go ahead for the redesign of the fifty pence coin. One may suspect that the removal of the “Britannia” design as one of the last enduring symbols of our great history.
Typical of new labours assault on all things British, with no pride in the past and no faith in the future, one Guardian historian asks if Jade Goody will replace this cultural and aspirational figure.

When will this dissassembling of our beloved country end? What are we waiting for?Should we be remembered as the only generation in British history to have given up without a fight?
We should lobby for the removal of traitor Brown, wrest back rule of law from the German-French alliance and elect a party with honour, decency and insight willing to face our problems.

I agree with your points, and unlike one of your respondents I am more concerned with what you have to say, rather than concern myself with a “meaningless avatar”.

Another point that has been missed, is that, whilst there were certainly commemorative issues of the fifty pence coin, Britannia, has featured on our coins since about 1740. Given that, and the fact that we have the song ‘Rule Britannia’, and the Romans named these Islands Britain, (meaning the bearded ones) tells me that Britannia has earned her place as a representative of Britain.

Of course, Brown, continues to undermine British history, along with his academic buddies, and that is why he is removing Britannia.

When the U.S. military invaded Iraq, it  lacked a common understanding of the problems inherent in counterinsurgency campaigns. It had neither studied them, nor developed doctrine and tactics to deal with them. It is fair to say that in 2003, most Army officers knew more about the U.S. Civil War than they did about counterinsurgency. The U.S. Army / Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual wa…
